Kit Carson Clerk of Court
The Colorado Judicial Branch identifies Trisa M. Keyser as Kit Carson County Clerk of Court, Jury Commissioner, and Probate Registrar. The county Combined Court page says Clerks of the Court are custodians of all records processed by the court, including case information, warrants, filings, pleadings, orders, writs, transcripts of judgment, garnishments, and payments for filings, fines, bail, and other money handled by the court.

Visitors use the courthouse south glass-door entrance and pass security screening. The Clerk and Recorder is in Suite 203, while the court clerk is in Suite 301. That distinction matters because divorce, felony, traffic, probate, and civil court files are court records, but marriage licenses and recorded land documents are county recorder records.
The Clerk of Court is also the local contact when a record cannot be resolved through a search screen. Probate files, juvenile matters, suppressed cases, old files, and certified document needs often require clerk review. Docket users can start online, but court copies, official seals, and record restrictions are handled through the court office or the statewide request form.
Clerk of Court vs Recorder
Kit Carson County has a split records structure. The Clerk of Court is part of the Colorado Judicial Branch. The county Clerk and Recorder is a separate elected county office led by Susan Corliss. The Recorder handles recorded documents, marriage licensing, elections, board records, motor vehicle title and registration functions, and county recording work.
This split is a common source of wrong-office requests. A divorce decree, felony complaint, civil judgment, protection order, traffic ticket, probate letter, or small-claims judgment is a court record. A marriage license, recorded deed, subdivision plat, military discharge copy, lien recording, motor vehicle title issue, or election record is normally a Clerk and Recorder matter. Sheriff incident and jail records are separate again.
| Office | Records handled | Contact path |

| County Clerk and Recorder | Marriage licenses, recorded documents, property records, elections, motor vehicle agent services | Suite 203, recorder search, county office phone |
| Sheriff records custodian | Releasable sheriff, jail, incident, service, and law-enforcement records | Sheriff administration and county CORA policy |

Use the Colorado Judicial Branch record/document request form when a copy, certified copy, divorce decree, protection order, ticket, sentence order, probate letter, or other court document is needed. CoCourts can show a register-of-actions summary for many district and county cases, but document images are not downloadable from CoCourts.

Kit Carson Clerk Fees
The court copy and request fees come from the Judicial Branch form and related fee schedule references. County recorder and CORA fees are different and should not be mixed with court-copy fees.
Fee estimates can change when a file is old, off site, broad, or needs redaction. A name search is separate from a document copy. A certified or exemplified copy is a per-document certification cost, not merely the page-copy price. If a request needs both copying and certification, the clerk can assess both types of charge.
| Item | Fee / rule |
|---|---|
| Court copy per page | $0.25 |
| Transcript of judgment | $25 |
| Certificate of satisfaction | $20 |
| Certified or exemplified court copy | $20 per document |
| Court name search | $5 |
| Off-site file retrieval | Actual cost |
| Research or redaction | $30/hour in 15-minute increments after the first hour |
Kit Carson Clerk Access Channels
Free docket search is best for same-day or future hearing information. CoCourts is best for paid register-of-actions summaries for many county and district case types. The clerk and statewide request form are the route for copies, certified records, probate, juvenile, sealed or suppressed questions, and documents not exposed through online search.
Access also depends on case type. CoCourts may cover district civil, domestic relations, criminal, county civil, small claims, misdemeanors, traffic, and traffic infractions, but it does not provide document images and excludes probate and juvenile case types. The Judicial Branch docket search is free but calendar-focused. The payment portal is useful for fines, costs, restitution, and tickets, but it is not a court-record copy system.
Federal records are separate from Kit Carson County Clerk of Court records. The federal sources below help distinguish state court records from federal systems.
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado is the federal bankruptcy court for Colorado.
Bankruptcy records do not come from the Kit Carson County Clerk of Court.
The bankruptcy CM/ECF live database is used for federal bankruptcy electronic records.
Use the local court clerk instead for District Court, County Court, probate, divorce, traffic, and criminal case copies.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado handles federal prosecution contacts, not local court-copy service.
The distinction helps users avoid sending local Kit Carson court-record requests to federal offices.
Restricted Clerk Records
Colorado court access is governed by court rules, Chief Justice Directives, statutes, and court orders. Juvenile records, sealed records, suppressed files, confidential filings, some probate documents, protected-party information, Social Security numbers, street addresses, and financial details may be restricted or redacted. The court may require photo identification for probate, juvenile, suppressed, or confidential material.
County CORA should not be used to bypass court-record restrictions. The county policy applies to records held by county offices and requires requests to go to the proper official custodian. Court case records follow the Judicial Branch process. When a request is sent to the wrong custodian, the requester may lose time and still need to resubmit through the correct office.
The Clerk of Court also serves as Jury Commissioner and Probate Registrar for Kit Carson County. Jury questions can use the jury contact listed by the Judicial Branch, while probate record questions still route through the court clerk function. That combined role is useful for local users because the same official office can explain whether a record is a court case file, probate matter, jury issue, or something that belongs with another county office.
For in-person service, plan around courthouse security and posted hours. Public access uses the south glass door, and all visitors pass screening. Bring the case number or party names, a government photo ID when restricted records may be involved, and enough detail to identify the exact document requested.
For current court dates, use the docket search before requesting copies. For payments, use the Colorado Judicial Online Payment System when the case is payable online. For official copies, return to the clerk or request form. This sequence keeps calendar lookup, payment lookup, and certified record service in their proper channels.
Note: The court clerk is the custodian for case records, while county CORA applies to county-held administrative records.
